Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George’s inside and outside workers have ratified a tentative agreement that will give them increases of 3% in each of the next 5 years.

“The membership ratified the agreement by 88%” says CUPE Local 399 President Dennis Marleau “We are really happy to have a deal that will give us stability for the next five years.”

Marleau says this agreement was worked out Monday with the help of a mediator “We asked for 3, 3, 4 and they weren’t going to bite. The extra percent was because we think the economy will be down in 2011, 2012, and 2013. They agreed to a 5 year deal at 3 percent which gives us stability. We proposed this idea and then the mediator helped.”

The package, if approved by City Council, would be retroactive to January 1st of this year.

The membership had rejected a three year deal presented last month. The membership said that package would have seen the workers falling behind their counterparts in other B.C. communities.

The City’s 600 inside and outside workers have been without a contract since December 31st of 2007.

So the only difference is a contract extension. Why did they need a mediator for that? Ah well at least it is settled now.
Workers need a 20% raise each year to keep up with the way things are going up
Of course we need a 20% raise every year, that is why fuel is so expensive.

Everything else should be going up at 20% per year as well for the other producers like food and lumber. That way their workers can get 20% raises as well.
funny how only half the membership showed up again...once again the lazy stayed home!

Why should they get a raise?!?!?

the statement above should have read
"The membership ratified the agreement by 44%"

you should be ashamed of yourself and your membership Mr.Marleau.

Its mandatory for a union member to picket but not to vote?

I would suggest some of those that didn't show up might have a life that made it impossible for them to. Some may work there but have the same special attitude about the whole process that you do.
You know that anti union attitude.

Who are you to make such a statement not knowing any facts about the people that didn't show up?
1st off LOSTFAITH. if there was a meeting that determined my wage and i had input, bet your bottom dollar i would be there.

2nd if they were unable to attend the meeting, lets see a doctors note, or better yet maybe one from the wife saying he was busy watching Big Brother

3rd WHO AM I TO MAKE SUCH A STATEMENT? the facts speak for themselves buddy...the union members who didnt show made the statement. I guess i just have to use crayons and draw a picture for you.

sounds like wavoes hit a chord with LOSTFAITH. guess LF stayed home and missed the vote too.

Yes it is a poor turnout for a vote for your working conditions.Maybe some were on shift and the union never bothered to get the ballots out to them.Maybe a few had loved ones in the hospital, and felt that this was more important.Could just be they didn't want to spend the time to get out there to vote.I think it could be a case of when it comes time to vote on something, such as Government(Federal,Provincial,or Civic)people don't want to waste their time,as they think it gives them an excuse to bitch and complain about everything.Well I never voted for that.Who knows why the turnout was so poor, only those people that never voted know their reasons. To call them lazy is not right.
