Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Airport runway expansion project is expected to start laying pavement the first week of July.
The extension of the runway will have a “turning D” at the end of it so an aircraft can come off the runway while another is landing or taking off. The runway is being widened by 50 feet to make it 200 feet wide and there will be a refuelling and de-icing pad. The project is ahead of schedule and under budget.
Most of the crush has been placed on the new sections of the runway, compacting work is underway and paving will begin on the south end first. Once the south end has been done it can be used for flights, and paving will move to the north end and the middle section will be done in early September.
There is optimism that when the 4000 foot runway extension is complete (early October) the official opening will herald in a flight that will land for refuelling.
Airport Authority Board Chairman Jim Blake says there is growing interest from airlines on possibly using the Prince George Airport as any effort to save fuel in today’s market is critical. “Just last week we had calls from four airlines asking us for more information, so that is a case of them coming to us” says Blake.
“We are working hard to have a carrier land the first day we open” says Blake. “We have a team in China now, working with carriers there, that is the goal though to have a carrier land the day we open.” That team has held meetings with eight different Chinese carriers.
