This morning marked the grand opening of the $7.3 million dollar Stuart Nechako Manor, Vanderhoof’s state-of-the-art residential care facility.
“Stuart Nechako Manor is an excellent home for seniors in the Vanderhoof area who need around-the-clock nursing support,” said Northern Health Board Member Roseline Ferré. “On behalf of Northern Health, I thank all the individuals and groups whose hard work made this facility a reality.”
Some features of the new 50-bed building include:
· Four living “pods” for residents, with courtyards that open to the south. Each pod/courtyard has an excellent view of the Nechako River;
· A living room and kitchen facility in each pod in which staff and residents can cook meals from time to time;
· Large common areas to support adult day services;
· Respite rooms for temporary accommodation to assist caregivers in the community;
· Efficient connections to St. John Hospital for the provision of meals, housekeeping, and heating services
· Board-and-batten siding using pine from mountain pine beetle-affected trees.

While all of the complex care residents from Omineca Lodge have now moved to Stuart Nechako Manor,several residents in independent apartments remain at the Lodge.
Northern Health is exploring the addition of Independent Living units with support services at Omineca Lodge, which would offer housing, meals, and health services for seniors who require some assistance to live independently.
