Prince George, B.C. - The Mayor’s Committee on Seniors has presented a list of  items it would like to see the City adopt.

  1. Develop a survey to   ask seniors how their view services provided by local businesses.
  2. Have the City fund a follow up meeting on Ethnic Seniors Community
  3. Have the City lobby the University, and some medical buildings for more accessible and affordable parking for seniors
  4. That the City continue to promote and enable the construction of housing for seniors, in particular “supportive” housing.
  5. The City provide  a short message in Spanish, Korean, Punjabi and Chinese saying “This is very important information, have someone read it to you.”
  6. Increase the taxi saver program, so it stays in step with increases to taxi fares
  7. Lobby Northern Health to fully fund and deploy the Geriatric Assessment and Treatment Centre
  8. Lobby Northern Health to establish a Seniors Directorate

Council has referred the list to City Staff to see what, if anything, the City can do.

Since seniors seem to be the victims of fraud, a list should be made of any companies or people that target seniors.
Especially those individuals who telemarket or door knock to gain access into seniors homes for work purposes.
If complaints have been made to city hall or the RCMP, the names could be put on a list, and seniors could check the list before hiring companies or people.
If a company is not in the phone book, it should send an alarm that they may not be legitimate.
Seniors should also take the time to call the better business bureau and give the name of the company and also the persons name.
Several companies working in the Prince George area can be found on this list.
Nothing like a bunch of grey-haired old geezers pushing their walkers down the street, to finally park them in front of city hall, raising their cane's, punching the air with their fists, to get their scratchy voices heard by the lord mayor and his henchmen.

But I can respond to one thing on their list, so that they don't have to hear all the disappointment from just one source:

"4. That the City continue to promote and enable the construction of housing for seniors, in particular “supportive” housing."

BC Housing, the people who manage the housing program for our gov't in Victoria, is no longer has a mandate to provide housing for seniors. They're onto the next thing - housing for the disadvantaged, homeless, and downtrodden. That's people walking the streets and backalleys, generally. Apparently there's enough beds out there now, to provide for the seniors. But if the city can find money themselves, hey, fly at it, but don't count on the cooperation of the rest of the taxpayers in B.C.
