Prince George, B.C. - The City of Prince George will pump $34.5 thousand dollars into the marketing plan for Horizon Air.

The money is the balance from the tourism funds allotted by the Provincial Government and distributed by UBCM.

The total   marketing package is expected to cost $56 thousand dollars with the balance of the money is expected to come from Northern Initiatives Trust, Northern B.C. Tourism and Tourism P.G.

The marketing plan is aimed at boosting the passenger load of the Horizon Air flight to Prince George from Seattle. The plan includes an extensive ad campaign which depicts Prince George as “Serengeti of the North” and “Heaven on Earth” as it focuses on the region’s unspoiled wilderness. The campaign also includes a regional presence at the L.A. Times
Wilderness Show.

There will be a full report on the impacts of the ad campaign delivered to Council next May when the first year for Horizon Air flights wraps up.

lets hope the other passenger carriers can get in on the "free ads" promoting Horizon air so they can promote their services.
............. :-(
Let's hope Horizon is as committed to providing the service, as we are in providing the guarantees and marketing dollars. Chester
The positive side is that PG will likely still be here ... as will the "Serengeti of the North" which can be accessed from the "Capital of the North" ;-)

So, people will be attracted to come here at all costs, even if Horizon will no longer be flying ..... maybe they will be hitchhiking to reduce travel costs ... so Horizon might not be benefitting, but we will be able to recoup the costs of paying out the guarantee to Horizon by maintaining employement and collecting taxes from those who will continue to be able to live here as a result of increased tourism.

Remember, we will be quite unaware of the leakage. I would think that there will be some who will see the ads, figure that sounds rather interesting and decide to come here for a visit, but they will fly with another airline (one they might have mileage points with for instance) or drive or whatever. So, PG likely will get more visitors from the ads than Horizon will get passengers.

;-)
dumb
City of PG shouldn't be jumping in and out of bed, like a cheap painted up whore, with these companies that have come knocking on their door with some proposal to make some money.

I'm sure there are studies that have been done, and assumptions been made by respected individuals, but my gut feel is that we (the ratepayers of PG) are going to be left out in the cold, come the end of the year term, and the stats show that not enough visitors have used the service, and Horizon Air decides to pull the plug.

The reasons:

It'll be blamed on a downturn in the economy, high fuel prices, too much competition, head office directive, etc, etc...

Oh well, I'm just covering old ground here, not saying anything that hasn't been said before, maybe I'm even preaching to the converted. I'm like a broken record, just saying the same thing over and over.

I hope I'm wrong.
So, why not elect a seaoned business man (or woman) as mayor? Oh, silly me, what kind of entrepreneur what run for public office? It really is too bad that for the most part our poiliticians do not have a private enterprise background, and I mean starting and successfully operating a business on their own, with their own money.
metalman.
May when the first year for Horizon Air flights wraps up. They walk with 400 thousand and the taxpayers are left holding the bag.

Metalman we already have a business man at City hall and his name is Mr Bates. It is he who should be telling Council if their plans are doable and within the budget. Its true the Mayor is runing the show and has no expertise in runing the affairs of our City.

There is so much apathy towards our polititians that tax payers have lost interest in what goes on at City hall that they just do the things that get the votes and have no direction form those who provide the funding.

And that will not change anuytime soon.

Cheers
