Prince George, B.C. – Provincial New Democratic Leader, Carole James, School District# 57 Trustee, Lois Boone and New Democratic Environment Critic, Shane Simpson gathered at Parkhill Centre today to talk about the 2.4 cent a litre gas tax that comes into effect July 1, 2008.

Lois Boone is concerned about the impact the tax will have on School District #57 “Next year we are anticipating that the cost of our fleet vehicles and utilities to heat our schools will be $80,000. That increases to almost a quarter of a million dollars once the tax is implemented. That is money we don’t get back, we cannot tax anyone to get it back and we don’t get rebates. This comes straight out of the classroom.”

Boone is unable to assess the full impact the tax will have on the bus system however she says  the School District has already seen an increase in $200,000 in gas costs from Diversified.

Carole James, says behaviours are already being impacted by higher prices “Markets have already increased the price of gas we don’t need the government piling on with an unfair gas tax.”

Several communities have already tried to lobby the provincial government to eliminate the carbon tax say it is unfair to rural and northern communities.

The Provincial government remains adamant that the tax will end up being revenue neutral.

Given the choice between the Liberal carbon tax and the one proposed by the NDP, I'd take the Liberal one.

Nice try Carole.
Look mummy... thieving bolshevics!
Look mommy people that care about other people protesting against a stupid tax imposed by people that don't care about other people.
Good thing the Carbon tax doesn't apply to respiration, the NDP would be broke.
The NDP isn't being honest about their plans. They're trying to get people riled-up, and for what? To try and score some cheap political points? Because we all know that THEY have a carbon tax plan as well. They're just not being upfront about it.

I think this will come back to haunt them because British Columbians are smart enough to realize that the carbon tax will be revenue neutral...I think people need to calm down and actually look at the facts before they yell and scream and vote NDP. Perhaps they'll learn something in the process.
I feel that if it was revenue neutral it wouldn't be happening.
What would be the point?

Does the NDP have their version....probably...........
I rarely agree on any NDP comments, but this Carbon tax is bad policy at the worst possible time. Jeff rubin from cibc reiterated $200 crude oil and a doubling of gasoline prices from here. Right or wrong on his call cheap gas is gone. Additional taxes is punitive and electoral suicide. If BC wanted this eco-nazi BS we would have voted for the green party.
BCRacer has it correct.
Bolsheviks? Mensheviks at the most, surely. You know, the ones the Bolsheviks murdered when Lenin took over, the democratic socialists.

A short course in political history might help you.
The carbon tax is NOT revenue neutral as far as those who have to pay it are concerned, and I doubt it really is anyway.
It WILL increase the overall costs of everything, from gasoline to heating oil and gas,to food and transportion, etc.because any cost incurred by any business WILL be passed on to the consumer.
I guess Gordon just forgot to mention that?
I won't be considering voting NDP anytime soon, but it does sort of leave us all behind a rock and a hard place.
Damned if we do an damned if we don't, and somehow I think the Liberals had that part all figured out!
The lack of good choices is the hardest part to swallow, but that's what happens when the government has no serious opposition and know it.
Ummm...lostfaith and BCRacer, you guys aren't doing your homework. Shame on you. Please open your web browsers to http://www.bcbudget.gov.bc.ca/2008/backgrounders/backgrounder_carbon_tax.htm and read the information from our bureaucrats in Victoria. For those of us who don't have the time to read the whole article, I'll quote the first line,

"...On July 1, 2008, subject to approval by the legislature, British Columbia will begin to phase in a fully revenue-neutral carbon tax with built-in protection for lower income British Columbians..."

So, spend that money wisely - that green stuff that'll be returned to us taxpayers. For example, don't fire up that gas-guzzler and sit in line at the local Tim's for a donut and cold cap, idling away while the 10 other vehicles in front of you get their orders processed. That my son, is not wise :-)
Anyways, another thing, what the heck is Lois doing with those 2 carpetbaggers from the big smoke? I know she's still got her nose up the NDP's posterior, but I had heard she and Carole had a cat-fight a while ago, and weren't chums anymore. Guess that rumour wasn't correct...

Oh well, as they say in politics, if you haven't heard a good rumour by 10 a.m. in the morning, you start one yourself.
I can sum up what would be an effective if not extreme solution to this countries woes with one phrase "coup d'état" It's high time! After all it was Ben Franklin who said a little revolution does a country good from time to time!
The newspaper said that the school board will have to pull another $80,000 bucks out of a hat to pay for fuel fer their buses. How is that "revenue neutral?" Does the school board #57 do it's own income tax or will the ask Gordo to raise our school taxes to compensate for these bucks? Such a scam! I need the dough so when I cash my Carbon Cheque I will write on the back of it, "Cashed under protest". As if that will amount to anything.
Nice to see the NDP protesting taxes. They would rather just get rid of emissions by removing business and jobs from the province instead.
YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME CAROL!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Revenue Neutral"...only for the BC Liberals, not Joe Six Pack. Gordon Campbell and the BC Liberals have not served us well. If there is any hope for those north of Hope it will come May 12, 2009. Vote for change.
Remember the nineties. Do not vote for change.
Remember the nineties? They're coming back and even the Great Gordo will not be able to stop this train wreck. Thank greed, banksters, and deregulated investment.
carbon tax may not be perfect but we need to do something about a wasteful society - yeah, stop the idling at timmy's and think about how yu are living & maybe just maybe it will be ok.
i think it is irresponsible to do an "axe the tax" campaign at this point in time (and believe me I have never been a BC Liberal gov't supporter -- more NDP in the past - but at least the Liberal are trying something.

NDP has lost my possible vote on this one.
