Prince George, B.C. - Forty more firefighters have been deployed to battle the Windfall Creek fire south west of Tumbler Ridge. “The fire is not moving, but it is not considered contained” says Jillian Chimko, spokesperson for the Prince George Fire Centre. Yesterday an air tanker spread fire retardant on the area and two choppers provided assistance. Heavy equipment is not an option on this fire as the terrain is too steep. That fire has consumed 160 hectares of forest.
As for the Kalder Lake fire south of Mackenzie, it is in mop up mode.
Yesterday’s thunderstorm sparked a further 17 fires, that brings to 53 the number of fires in the Prince George Fire Centre. “We are getting a lot of rain so that is helping” says Chimko.
To the south in the Cariboo Fire Centre, crews have contained about half of the Itcha Mountains Fire burning in the Itcha-Ilgachuz Provincial Park .
The 60 firefighters are back on the fire line today, and making progress containing the rest of the fire, which is 274 hectares.
The crews are being supported by three medium helicopters, one intermediate helicopter and one light helicopter, for a total of five aircraft on the fire.
The fire is in a remote area within the park and there are no communities or structures being threatened by the fire at this time.
